How long intercourse lasts is a major concern for men. A psychologist from the University of Queensland named Brendan Zietsch wrote an article about how long couples last in penetrative intercourse.
While there are a lot of other things going on during the act, the psychologist focused on the time the penis enters the vagina until the time of ejaculation.
Defining the Start and End of Intercourse
The definition is quite simple as it revolves around the penis itself. Zietsch studied couples who measured their intercourse duration from the time of penetration until the guy ejaculates using a stopwatch. About 500 heterosexual couples participated in the study, which took place in many parts of the world. The survey lasted for four weeks. Each couple was asked to press the start button right at the time of penile penetration and the stop button after ejaculation. Using a stopwatch was preferred because simply asking would result in biased answers.
As for the findings of the study, the shortest is 33 seconds and the longest is 44 minutes. But the average for all couples was 5.4 minutes, meaning that most couples aim to achieve this duration each time they do the act.
What Affects and What Doesn’t Affect Sexual Stamina
According to the study, the following did not affect how long the sex lasts:
- Condom Use: There is a myth that condoms can make a man lose erection because there’s less sensitivity and feeling.
- Race: The country of origin of the males did not seem to affect the duration of sex.
- Circumcision: Whether a man is circumcised or not also doesn’t have a say in his sexual stamina.
- Age: The older the couple, the shorter the duration of sex.
- Body Type: One study claims fat guys last longer than thin and fit ones.
- Penis Shape: This is probably the most controversial. According to another study from the State University of New York at Albany, the way the penis is shaped may serve as a semen displacement tool.
Meanwhile, a 2008 study conducted by therapists, the average sex duration of five minutes could be viewed as good or bad, depending on the partner. Too short lasts two minutes at the most, while enough is from three to seven minutes. Most couples prefer from seven to 13 minutes, but while anything longer than 10 minutes is great, many think it is unusual.
